Kolhapur Hikers arranged Trek to Vasota fort
on 20 th April 2013 (Leaving on 19th Night)

Brief Information about Vasota  :-
Region: Satara

Fort Height : 3614 ft.

Type : Forest Fort

Grade : Medium

Mode of Transport : Private & Public Transport

Vasota is also known as Vyaghragad (fortress of the Tiger). Vasota fort lies within the Koyna sanctuary (total area 423 sq km), and you need a special permit from the Forest office at Bamnoli to get in. The forest at the base of Vasota can be reached only by hiring a boat from Bamnoli and crossing the Koyna lake (1.5 hours). There is no regular boat service. The boat drops you at Met-Indavli, which is a usually uninhabited forest camp, and returns to Bamnoli immediately. A 2-hour tough uphill hike through dense pristine forest takes you to the ruined fortress.

There is no potable water at the top, you must carry your own or fill from a stream on the way up. This is a very isolated and remote mountaintop -- no human habitation and no shelter. Do not attempt in the rainy season. You can admire the ruined remains of a palace, Shiva temple and gate to Peshwa’s prison on top. Fantastic views of Babu Kada, Old Vasota, Nageshwar Lingis, Koyna Lake, Koyna Forest…and yes, the stars above !!!

                                              About Vasota Fort

Vasota Fort (also calles Vyaghragad) is located in Satara District in the Indian state of Maharashtra It
was famouslv defended by Tai Telin a mistress of Pant Pratinidhi a killedar of the fort when he was
captured.Vasota fort is attributed to the Kolhapur Shilahara Raja Bhoja II (1179-1193) of Panhala .
Vasota always remained with Marathas, Shirker & Mores in 16th century & then incorporated in Swarajya
by Shivaji  Maharaj in 1655 during the conquest of Javli. Shivaji Maharaj named the fort "Vyaghragad"
( Vyaghra - means tiger), owing to its difficult natural defense.

After Shivaji Maharaj, the brave Maratha Bajirao Peshwa carried on the swarajya mission of ousting the
Mughal invaders from our country. In 1818 however, British bombarded the fort with heavy artillerv
therebv destroying many buildings on Vasota ( Chandika mandir,Daru-kothar,etc.)& looted property
     worth 5 lakhs.
Today the fort stands in a diplapidated condition in a thick jungle with remnants of Shree Mahadev mandir,
the plinth of ahuge"sadar" (discussion place), the fallen ramparts & spectacular view of Nageshwar
peak & Shivsagar lake (Koyna backwaters). It is located about 170 km from Kolhapur, it is a protected
natural reserve and a national treasure nest .

The blue-green expanse of Koyna backwater, the evergreen forests of Koyna wildlife sanctuary, hike to
Vasota fort hidden in thick jungle, the spectacular view from top of the fory along with the beauty and
serenity of the place leaves one spell bound.

Explore the Legendry Dudhsagar Waterfall in Goa & Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary with Kolhapur Hikers on 24th and 25th August 2013

    Dudhsagar waterfall

Dudhsagar is one of the world's most exquisite falls. It lies high up in the Mandovi River's watershed and so are so spectacular during the monsoon season when the falls are transformed into one of the most powerful falls in India. Dudhsagar Falls is listed as India's fifth tallest waterfall and is 227th in the world at 310 m. The water plummets hundreds of meters (over a thousand feet) in large volumes during the rainy monsoon season, forming one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Goa.

    Dudhsagar waterfall

There is also a legend associated with this waterfall. It is believed that a beautiful princess lived in the forest (near present day Dudhsagar Falls) in a palace. She loved and enjoyed bathing in a lake nearby and used to drink "sweetened milk" from her "golden jug" after finishing with her bath. One day while enjoying her jug of milk she found herself being watched by a prince, who was standing amongst the trees. Red with embarrassment at her inadequate bathing attire, she poured the jug of milk in front of him to form an improvised curtain to hide her body while the maids rushed to cover her with her dress. It is said that it is that sweetened milk that cascades down the mountain slope as Dudhsagar Falls to this day as a tribute to the virtue and modesty of the princess.

      SOME INTERESTING THING ABOUT “Machal”

A lovely hill station with cool climate around the year near Vishal Gad fort. Start of river MUCHKUNDI which blows a crystal white water. A challenging and adventurous trekking point for nature lovers and trekkers. Its  a  Awesome place for nature Photography

Situated almost 4000 feet high from the average sea level, this hill is separated from Vishalgad fort and the main Sahyadri range by a narrow gorge. Crowned with a level plateau three and a half miles long and one and a half broad, and freely supplied with water this 1500 Ares table land is well suited for a tourist destination. Clear and clean airy atmosphere, availability of sufficient potable water round the year at Machal, fascinates the visitors and gives them immense satisfaction. The place can be directly compared with Mahabaleshwar and Matheran, very famous hill stations in Maharashtra.

The place is situated on tableland in the lanes of haughty Sahyadri Mountains few miles south of the Rantnagiri-Kolhapure road. According to mythology in a narrow mounted cave on the western side of the hill, there lived the famous saint Muchkund blessed by Lord Krishna. And the origin of river Muchakundi can be observed at this place. Kajali and Muchkundi are the two rivers flowing through Lanja taluka .These rivers are originating from Sahtadri lanes and flow towards west to meet the Arabin sea .Due to the heavy rainfall in the region these rivers are flooded with water in rainy season. But due the natural slope the water has way to reach the sea hence there is no danger of flood in region Zapade, Berdewadi, Vhel. Panhale are few dams which supply the water to the place. There is an abundance of potable water even during summer season the dams are having adequate stock of water and hence there is no question of scarcity of potable water.

Machal can be accessed through the Amba Ghat. Machal is located at a distance of 32 kms from Lanja. The nearest railway station- Talavde is 15 kms from Machal and Kolhapur railway station is 80 kms to the south-east.

    History of Jivdhan And Naneghat
Forts originated during the Satvaahan era. Every entry point on the forts built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj have a 'Kalas' and Lord Ganesh carved on it. The nearby Naneghat (Toll collection booth) was used for commercial purpose by traders to help in easy movements of goods. As this was an important pass joining the seas to the mainland, it was heavily guarded from enemies. The Jivdhan fort stood as an important guard fort to protect the interests of various kingdoms. Jivdhan to Naneghat has an open field of 2–3 km, which gives any clear indication of enemy approach. The British captured this fort in 1818 and destroyed all approaches. This fort was captured by Col. Prother of the East India company and later destroyed.

== Major Features Of Jivdhan Fort ==

    ===Storehouses===
There are some unexplored storehouse at top of the fort which can be explored with proper precautions.

    ===Water Tanks ===
There are a few water tanks at top of the fort, water from these tanks is not portable as they are open all the year round. One should use caution while using this for cooking food or drinking.

    ===Pinnacle near the fort===
This is about 385 feet high. When you approach the fort it looks smaller in size but as you move closer to the fort you can actually get a feel of how high the pinnacle is. This pinnacle is known as 'Vanderlingi'. This is surmountable with use of proper rock climbing equipment. It may take a day or 2 to climb the pinnacle. One needs to scout the area for beehives in order to climb with complete control.

    ===North front===
Once you are at the top of the fort you can view various hilltops and forts nearby. You will clearly see forts like Harishchandragad, Chavaand, Ratangad, Naneghat, Manikdoh Dam and the entire Junnar plateau.

      •

      •  Vasota Fort (also calles Vyaghragad) is located in Satara District in the Indian state of Maharashtra It
was famouslv defended by Tai Telin a mistress of Pant Pratinidhi a killedar of the fort when he was
captured.Vasota fort is attributed to the Kolhapur Shilahara Raja Bhoja II (1179-1193) of Panhala .

Roopkund A Himalayan Mystery Lake Trek 20th May 2014

      $

      0

      Region :- Uttarakhand
      Duration :- 10 Days
      Grade :- Moderate to Difficult
      Max Altitude :- 15,696 Ft.
Approx Trekking Km :- 53 kms.
      Max Participants :- 30 only

The Roopkund Trek is to a Himalayan trekker what the movie 'Sholay' is to a hardcore Bollywood buff. Just like Sholay is the complete Bollywood entertainer (it has action, drama, comedy, romance), Roopkund is the quintessential Himalayan trek. This trek has snowcaps, meadows, lakes, forests, folklore; and yes, it has an intriguing flashback too. Roopkund is a mountain lake, lying in the Garhwal Himalayas in the Chamoli district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand.Situated at a high altitude, the lake remains frozen almost throughout the year. Roopkund is also called the 'Mystery Lake', or the 'Skeletal Lake', on account of the several hundred human skeletons found scattered in and around the lake.
A Forest Officer stumbled upon these skeletons in the year 1942, and this surprising discovery triggered a series of visits from scientists from all over the world who wanted to get to the bottom of this mystery. A lot of research went into finding out how so many skeletons came to exist near this lake, and eventually it was concluded that these skeletons belonged to a group of pilgrims, who were caught unprepared in a hailstorm( somewhere around AD850 ). The hailstones were as big as cricket balls, and with no shelter in site, they succumbed to injuries on their skulls. National Geographic aired a story regarding this lake, which made the lake a popular destination among trekkers. Aside from all this myth and mystery around the trek, the Roopkund Trek is the perfect route to showcase the surreal Himalayan beauty;and it the perfect trek to initiate you into high altitude treks. The trek starts from Lohajung, situated at an elevation of 3200 meters, and after gradually trekking uphill for 5 days you will reach Roopkund which lies at approximately 5000 meters above sea-level.
At this altitude the level of oxygen in the air is considerably lesser than what the lowland folks are used to, and the TTH team will give you various tips to enable you to effectively cope with this change. Being in good physical shape will ensure that you adapt to the thinning air quickly. Also, good fitness level will allow you more energy to enjoy the spectacular views without worrying about nagging bouts of altitude induced problems. So when you plan for this trek, also plan out a fitness regime for yourself.
There are two time windows in a year when you can do this trek – once after winter from mid-May to mid-June, and once post monsoon during September and October. You can choose the post-winter variant if you want to have some fun with snow, or you can choose the post-monsoon variant if you want to stroll through lush green Himalayan meadows. Whatever the season, the weather in the mountains is delicately balanced, and can go from sunny to cloudy in minutes. This adds another dimension to the adventure, and you should be equippedwith wind and water proof clothing to face these weatherchanges.
The first couple of days on the trek will take you through quaint villages, cheerful streams, and rapid mountain rivers. The sunlight streaming through the trees in the forests will make the entire mountainside glow golden. Trek some more, and you will soon leave the trees behind. Now you will be greeted by miles and miles of lush meadows, called 'Bugyals' in the local tongue.
The Bugyals are dotted with small and big lakes at intervals. The pure air, the poignant greens and the effervescent blues will make you forget all your troubles. Next is the summit stretch, where your stamina will be tested as the air gets thinner and thinner. At the end of the climb lies the coveted Roopkund, frozen, serene, and pristine. Near the lake you can still find lots of skeletons, which have been well preserved because of the cold after all these centuries. From here, you can spot a lot of other peaks – Trishul, Nandaghungti and Choukhamba.
The route followed on the Roopkund trek overlaps with a pilgrimage which occurs every year, called the Raj Jat Yatra. This festive pilgrimage is held each year to worship goddess Nanda Devi, and people from several villages of the Kumaon and Garhwal participate in this Yatra. This Yatra starts from a small village 'Nauti' near Karnaprayag, and goes beyond Roopkund to Homkund. If you are lucky enough to be on the trek during this Yatra, you will meet a lot of locals dressed in their traditional attire participating in the festival. Meeting these welcoming and warm-hearted people will be an unforgettable encounter. The Roopkund trek is a most enriching experience for the body and the soul. This time spent amidst the mountains will remove the cob-webs from your mind and will thoroughly rejuvenate you.

The place can be directly compared with Mahabaleshwarand Matheran, very famous hill stations in Maharashtra.

The water plummets hundreds of meters (over a thousand feet) in large volumes during the rainy monsoon season, forming one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Goa

A Popular  Movie Chennai Express Shooting Was Done At Dudhsagar Waterfall
